Sober House: Dr. Drew Tells Us What to Expect

After rehab comes sober living. And VH1 is following many of the Celebrity Rehab graduates through their sober living experience. I think these two shows are some of the best programming on VH1. They show young people the real dangers and consequences of drug use and hopefully, could stop some from using at all.

And if viewers think that rehab for three weeks is all it takes to kick a serious addiction, Sober House should help alleviate that myth. It’s a life-changing, forever journey.

In a recent interview, Dr. Drew Pinsky tells about the new season on VH1 and how it will be different from Celebrity Rehab:

What can we expect from Sober House?

Now the group is leaving a medically managed environment and going to live on their own. They have to find jobs, they have to make an after-care plan, they have to figure out where their lives are going, they have to establish a program of recovering, they have to navigate through Hollywood, which is a treacherous environment. In the meantime, Bob and I keep seeing them in treatment as outpatients. We see them everyday or two. You’ll meet the house manager, Jennifer Gimenez, who’s a sober person herself. She has a big job on her hands. The experience is very evocative for her.

Out of all the cast, you haven’t treated Andy Dick before.

He comes in midway. He has a crisis and he wants me to treat him. I tell him, “I’m filming a TV show, I can’t,” and he says, “Well, I’ll come there, then.” He came in and that was that. He did a great job. He was great.

Mary Carey’s back on VH1. That’s a good thing.

Her thing is struggling with the complete and tremendous changes she has to make in her life. My relationship with her is marked by vivid moments, and we had one in treatment during this show. She leaned forward and said, “Drew, you want me to change everything.” I said, “Yeah, I don’t see you staying sober if you don’t change your life.” And she said, “Oh, I don’t know if I can do that.” I get it, all right. We’ll work on it.

What about the rest of the cast?

Steven Adler and Seth have major problems. Some stuff happens. Some really intense stuff. Rodney is great, as always. Amber has her moments of struggling. Nikki does great, she gets with the program on this one. This show is really different from Rehab. It’s a whole new journey. It’s a lower level of care. More independence means more opportunity for antics.

Be sure to set your TiVo for Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House when it premieres Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10/9c on VH1.

    Dr. Drew
I hope this works out the best for you. The half way houses (SOBER LIVING) I was living in after a 28 day detox was much more country than country club like this. I hope these people get clean enough to see just what they have been offered. I think for a few it could be the end of the road if this does not work. I don’t think anyone should be locked up for drug addiction, However there are extream cases where perhaps a few months with no contack with the rest of the world and intense meetings. Group and indevidgual. Keep a schedual so full there is only time to exersise an hour a day and eat, shower sleep and then more meetings. As militent as that sounds I think with out that kind of innervention some will die. I would imagine most of there families have givin up on them so this is probably the last shot. Lets just hope so. The seem to lhave a chance for the best treatment hope everyone takes advantage of it.

I love Sober House. Im rooting for all of you guys. I love Steven Adler, I want to give you such a big hug. I’m praying for all of you to succeed with your sober living. I love this show. I understand about addiction, my father died when I was 7 years old because he was an alcoholic. My brother found him dead on the floor of his room. I had to grow up without him and I still wish he was here. Im only 42 now, I do not drink smoke or do drugs. I did not want to end up like my father. You guys can make it. you have a great support system. And we all are praying for you. Keep up the sober living.

  6. enoel says:

why doesn’t someone call these people out when they exhibit old behaviors? could you get some co-dependent counseling for mary. how about meetings and sponsors. These folks need some structure. how about a weekly plan to follow

  7. Brian says:

I wish you all well………Stay strong

  8. nancy says:

I never knew of Seth before the 1st show and he appears to be a very sweet guy and reminds me so much of my son. I have been rooting for him all the way. I have struggled with addiction since age 13. God bless him! I think this show is great letting us know that not just everyday people have issues. Good luck to all of them!!!

I too have been & continue struggling with addiction for the past 30 years. I have gone through 4 different rehabs, aftercare, 12 Step meetings. in one 24-hour period I was fired from my job and lost my RN license (of 23 years) my husband left with our one-year-old daughter, I was losing my home my nine-year-old daughter was in the hospital-dying from Crohn’s disease, and I was facing felony charges. It has taken a long time and a lot of looking at myself to get back in to life and wanting and appreciating life in whatever challenges it may present. All this because of want of the drug, this can happen to you too. I love the show and it reminds me of where I was and could be in just a heartbeat. Thank you Dr. Drew.

  10. karen says:

watch every thrusday to see how everyone is doing.
i lost a very dear friend to drug addiction.
i wish everyone well, stay strong, you all are important, and have a meaning in this life.

  11. My name is James. I am a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I went in and out of rehabs and sober houses like yours for years. Some of these people on your show might have a chance if they tried getting a sponsor, working the steps, going to meetings, getting into serice and believing in a higher power. Whether its Drugs or Alcohol, they are a symptom, selfishness and self-centeredness are the problem, steps are the solution. I know it’s “a show” but come on! What about Alcoholics Anonymous thats where you will find the answers……I am willing to sponsor. Thank You James Daryl Wood

  12. Tracey says:

My sister always says I’m going to die from an Od. I did try to take my life and was on life support. I still can’t seem to stop. I can’t take the pain. I wish you had a everyday people rehab. I need help!

  13. nancy says:

i have changed my mind about seth. After this last show I realized that he needs more help than he is willing to go after. I know the disease makes us selfish but he made everything all about him. Rodney King is the inspirational guy out of the bunch. He is sincere about wanting recovery. When you forst get sober the last thing you need to do is go straight to the clubs. That’s simply begging for a relapse. Rodney had sense enough to stay away from all that and plays it safe while the others flirt with drugs and alcohol. Good job and thumbs up to Rodney. God bless them all.

  14. victoria says:

God bless all of u!!!I have struggled with addiction just like all of u.I am now sober 2 years. The scene on seth with the crack is what i was like at times as well.It is a perfect example of how dangerously, strong this disease is!!!!Go to A.A and beware of people places and things!!!!

  15. victoria says:

one more thing,I think Andy Dick is such a sweetie!!!Great addtion to the show and I am praying for all of you.I think you should have AA meeting at the house.I wish i could meet u guys!!!

  16. nicole wray says:
