One of the greatest people of our time, Nelson Mandela, turns 90 on July 18. Mandela, known for his long struggle against Apartheid, in South Aftica, has more recently taken up another fight. In 2003, as a response to the global AIDS epidemic, Nelson Mandela created 46664, named after his prison number while he was serving 27 years for leading a liberation movement. Mandela decided to harness the support of musicians to educate and raise awareness of AIDS among the world’s youth. A brilliant man, all of us benefit from his presence in the world.
Now, on the eve of his 90th birthday, musicians gather in London to honor Nelson Mandela. VH1 will air the concert, Monday evening, June 30 at 9PM/8PM Central. Will Smith hosts, and a long list of celebrity musicians join in to honor the man.
